Northfield - Vessey, Theodore (Ted) Passed away, peacefully and painlessly, on August 28th, 2025. He was 87. Born in St. Paul in 1938, he was in the first graduating class from Mounds View High School. He was an Eagle Scout at age 14. He received a BA in math and physics and PhD in mathematics from the University of Minnesota. Ted was a devoted husband, father, and teacher. He taught at St. Olaf College for 35 years, from 1970 to 2005. After retiring from St. Olaf, he taught six more years at Carleton College. For much of his time at St. Olaf he was the department chair and helped shape the math department into one of the strongest in the country. Ted had a deep love for teaching. It was important to him to show the relevance and the beauty of mathematics. In 2001 he won an "outstanding college mathematics teacher" award from the Mathematical Association of America. He coached the St. Olaf Alpine Ski Team and co-founded the Northfield Soccer Association. He is preceded in death by his brother, Ralph. He is survived by his wife, Margie, his two sons, David (Mara Naselli) and James (Saranya), and his four grandchildren, Ike, Gabriel, Maya, and Benno. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Northfield on Sunday, September 7th at 2:00pm. Visitation will begin at 1:00PM. www.northfieldfuneral.com
