Aitkin, MN - Barber, Dr. Shirley L., age 86 of Roseville died Friday, December 26, at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Preceded in death by parents Andrew & Aili; husband of over 40 years: Delos; an unnamed son; and sister: Sonja. Survived by daughter: Linda (Mitch); grandchildren: John, James, Hazel & Emma; Brother: Bob (Sharon); Sisters: Sandy & Sally (Frank); & Brothers-In-Law: Don & Rolland (Sharon); many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. Shirley was a lifelong learner and educator with most of her professional work as a Home Economist with Ramsey County Extension Service. Shirley was born in Aitkin, MN on March 17, 1939, to Andrew and Aili (Niemi) Lake. Shirley attended country school in Finnish until the family moved, then attending Aitkin schools, graduating in 1957. Shirley received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Education in Home Economics and a Ph.D. in Adult Education in Home Economics, all from the U of M with supporting Doctoral Studies from Michigan State University. Shirley retired in 2000 after a distinguished 35-year career as an extension educator in financial and business management, where she was seen as a pioneer and innovator. She was a team member that brought Expanded Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) to Minnesota, created programs working with immigrants from Southeast Asia and received the USDA Secretary of Agriculture Honor Award in 1998. Shirley worked with Native American and minority groups in the Ramsey County area and was well known for her work with "Who Gets Grandma's Yellow Pie Plate?" Shirley, a lifelong learner, educator and leader, served as President of Roseville Lutheran Church, officer and committee member for numerous professional and personal organizations including Beta of Clovia and National Clovia, and assisted countless people, particularly women, in their educational pursuits. Shirley traveled all 50 States, over 60 countries and all 7 continents. Upon her death Shirley returned to her beloved U of M helping scientists and doctors learn as part of the Anatomy Bequest program. Visitation 4-7pm Friday, February 13. Funeral service 2pm Saturday, February 14. All gatherings at Roseville Lutheran Church, 1215 Roselawn Ave, Roseville. Private interment at a later date. Shirley's family wishes to thank Aicota Health Care Facility staff and Moments Hospice for their excellent care.
