Shelby Andress Obituary

St. Louis Park, MN - Ingrid Shelby (Gimse) Andress, age 92, of St. Louis Park, Minnesota, died peacefully on November 1, 2025.

Shelby was born in Minot, North Dakota on April 27, 1933, to Alford M. Gimse and Ingrid (Oen) Gimse. She graduated from Minot High School in 1951 and earned a bachelor's degree in English at Augsburg College in 1956, where she served as the first female student body president.

Shelby married James "Jim" Andress in 1956 and raised three children in Golden Valley, Minnesota - Paul, Liz, and Mary Sue.

Shelby's career spanned a variety of roles at what began as Lutheran Youth Research and eventually became Search Institute. She was extremely gifted at entering communities and guiding a planning process for "building youth assets," work that brought her into 350 communities in 35 states. She received numerous honors and distinctions throughout her life.

Shelby loved music and theater, poetry and film, nature and travel, and time with family and friends. She was curious about everyone she met. She lived out her faith by doing good in the world. She experienced her elder years as a time of grief and gratitude - grief as her body and mind weakened, gratitude for each person who cared for her, grateful that she had everything she needed.

Shelby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her daughter Mary Sue Barber. She is survived by son Paul Andress (Margot) and daughter Elizabeth Andress (Steve Solbrack): brother A. Malcolm "Mac" Gimse and his wife Jackie; grandsons James, Erik, Jonathan, and Kristian; great-grandchildren Emerson, Julius, Lois, Benjamin, and Waylon; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

The family extends gratitude to all the caregivers at Parkwood Assisted Living, Park Nicollet Palliative Care and Hospice Care, J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice, and to death doula Nina Guertin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 11:00a.m., with visitation one hour prior, at Edina Community Lutheran Church, 4113 W. 54th St., Edina, MN.
