Russell Paul Zabilka Sr. (Russ) Obituary
Coon Rapids, MN - Passed away peacefully in his home in Coon Rapids surrounded by his family at his side on May 23, 2026, after his courageous battle with cancer at the age of 77.
Russ was born in Chicago Illinois on December 17, 1948, to Madeline (Morando) & Robert Zabilka. He grew up with his 8 brothers and sisters not far from Wrigley Field. His summer days were often spent sneaking into the Cubs games or cleaning the stands for free entry with his friends. In 1968 he joined the Marine Corp where he was stationed in Okinawa Japan. During his time there, he worked as a lithographer, which may explain his lifelong love of newspapers and why he still had a delivered printed daily Star Tribune subscription even in 2026.
After returning home from military service, Russ began a career as an insulator working on nuclear power plants across the country. While living in Ohio, he met his wife and together they raised 3 children. After years of moving from state to state helping build newly constructed plants, the family eventually made Minnesota their permanent home.
In retirement, Russ shared a life filled with love, travel and laughter alongside Susan Curtis. For the last 14 years, the two especially enjoyed traveling in their RV throughout the country and Canada with his beloved dog Roxy.
Preceded in death by Mother Madeline (Morando), Father Robert Zabilka, sister Barbara Glans and brother Terrance Glans.
Survived by: Susan Curtis; Children Russell Zabilka Jr. (Melissa), Amanda Shaw (Tony) and Jon Zabilka; Grandchildren Tyler and Keira Shaw. Siblings: Bob, Nancy, Ray, Pam, Dave & Jimmy. Many loved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on 06-20-2026 at Jay's Garage, 2632 8th Ave Anoka, MN 55303.
