Rosemary Sartell Thorsen Obituary

Minnetonka, MN - Rosemary (Sartell) Thorsen

Age 97, formerly of Golden Valley, passed away March 28, 2026. Rosemary was proud to be a great granddaughter of the founder of Sartell, Minnesota. Rosemary Sartell met Dick Thorsen in a third-grade play as Queen Isabella to his role as Christopher Columbus. For nearly 75 years, she commissioned his travels as his wife—Rosemary Thorsen. She was co-valedictorian at Patrick Henry High School with Dick Thorsen, the love of her life. Rosemary went on to a life of community service. Most notably, she served as the first woman mayor of Golden Valley in the 1970s. Then, she returned to the University of Minnesota to complete a Bachelor's Degree of Urban Studies. She enjoyed serving as Business Administrator of Plymouth Congregational Church for many years and had a strong work ethic throughout her career. Rosemary is survived by her son, Doug (Debbie) Thorsen, and daughters, Diane (Chris) Merz, and Patty Thorsen; grandsons Alex (Becky) Thorsen, Eric (Jennifer) Ternand, and Kevin Thorsen. Rosemary solved daily crossword puzzles, only in ink. She loved watching TPT's Almanac and poring over the morning paper. She was a formidable Scrabble opponent. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the AAUW Minneapolis or to a favorite charity of the donor's choice. We want to thank everyone at the Orchards of Minnetonka and Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital Hospice for their tender loving care of Mom in her final days. Rosemary and Dick will be interred together in a private ceremony at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Rosemary will be greatly missed—her unmatched wit and wisdom, and her warm, gentle smile.
