Roger Nelson Obituary

Mpls - After a long and fulfilling life, Roger Nelson of Minneapolis departed this earth on April 2, 2026, leaving a void in the world of his family and friends who will greatly miss his comforting presence in their lives.

Roger was born to Inger and Herman Nelson in Webster City, Iowa. After completing college at Iowa State University, he joined the United States Navy, serving as a navigator on a troop ship during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he joined 3M Company, where he travelled the world for the International Division. The people under his direction thought highly of him and nominated him for Boss of the Year, an honor he won.

In addition to 3M, he held management positions with S&M Company, Domain Industries, and SciCom Data Services. He also founded a Twin Cities branch of Machinery Wholesalers.

Roger was an avid reader of a broad variety of books, with a particular interest in history and historical biography. He also loved golf, biking, and skiing, especially the latter two because, as he said, "you don't keep score." He was also a prolific poet, composing many poems to celebrate significant events in the lives of his friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Jennifer, and his son Brian. He is survived by many people in "Family Simple" and "Family Complex," including his wife of 58 years Andrine, his daughter Christie, brother-in-law Jay Hornbacher (Gayle), niece Marya Hornbacher, nephew Paul Cummings (Stacey) and their children, nephew Tim Cummings (Sandie) and their children, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law once removed, Judy Hornbacher and Steve Benson, and by a host of lifelong friends.

Roger was a gentleman in every sense of the word, respected by all who knew him. His circle of family and friends are truly blessed to have had him in their lives for so many years. Port ahoy, dear Roger! Yours was a ship well sailed.

A special thank you to the Waters on 50th, to Minnesota Hospice, and to the incredible Lizzy for the wonderful care they provided. Roger chose to donate his body to the U of M Medical School Anatomy Bequest Program.

A service of remembrance will be held on May 7 at Lake Harriet United Methodist Church, 4901 Chowen Ave. S, with gathering time at 10 am and the service at 11 am. A luncheon will follow the service.
