Richard P. Anderson Obituary

Darien, IL - Anderson, Richard P. of Darien, IL, passed on July 19, 2025. Dick lived a full life of 91 years. We will miss him dearly. What made Dick special? He had incredible intellectual curiosity. Dick wanted to know about every topic under the sun, and not just know a bit about it but truly understand how it worked. His very broad interests included art, sailing, adventuring, and of course science in all shapes and forms. Dick and his close friend Donn Armstrong collaborated on countless projects over the years, and were even working on a new design project in the weeks before Dick passed. He loved adventures, particularly if they involved spending time on the water. The Minnesota native loved sailing the oceans, great lakes, and doing river cruises. Dick undertook his biggest adventure when he was in his 20s. He and his buddies Al Forsythe and Bruce Katter quit their jobs and spent several years cruising the Caribbean and Pacific. Dick also was a terrific skier and top-notch all around athlete. Dick thoroughly believed in education. He often said that helping family through college and graduate school was the best thing he had ever done. Dick was a lifelong learner himself, and took classes on topics as diverse as art and welding. Dick was born in 1934 to Marvin and Etta Nelson Anderson, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dick is survived by his nephews Murray Anderson, Jon Anderson, Michael Schumacher and Frank Schumacher, his niece Anita Anderson, his great-niece Katie Anderson, his great-nephews Matthew Anderson, Nathan Anderson, Michael Anderson, lots of wonderful great-great nieces and nephews, his brother in law Gerald Schumacher, his very close friends Bette Palmros and Kelsey Palmros Odell, who Dick considered his granddaughter, and many friends across the globe. Dick's brother Marlowe, sister Donna, nephew Gregory and niece Sherri predeceased him. Dick very much liked the idea of having a big party to celebrate his life, so we plan to do that in a few months. To ensure you are notified of the time and place, please contact mikeschumacher123@hotmail.com or jon-anderson@live.com. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable donation in Dick's name. One of Dick's favorite activities was sending Christmas toys to needy children with his dear friend, Dr. Jerry Buster, (toysfortots.org). However, if you prefer another charity that is more than fine. Dick brought so much to his family and many friends. We are incredibly grateful that he was such a big part of our lives. Rest in peace, Dick
