Columbia Heights, Minnesota - Neil was born February 15th, 1948, in the small town of Hallock, MN, to parents Kenneth "Kenny" Gardner and Mildred "Millie" (Lindstrom) Gardner. He peacefully passed on February 6th, 2026, surrounded by the love of family and friends.
Survived by children: Jennifer (Matt), Alex (Allison), Eric (Kylie).
Grandchildren: Evan, Cole, Gabriella.
Sisters: Sandra (Jim), Barbara (Dick). Sister-in-law: Nancy. Nieces: Lisa, Ally, Kara. Nephews: Kevin, Brian, Cory. Many great nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Gardner, and nephew Andrew Baker.
After being selected for service in the Vietnam War, he went on to receive a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of MN and another in Natural Resources. He had a long, rewarding career with the State of MN in Social Services and retired as a Department Program Auditor.
Neil was a dedicated man of many talents with a wealth of knowledge that shone through his work, passions, and life. An adventurous nature lover who reveled in the great outdoors, especially when at the cabin. He was a passionate political enthusiast who enjoyed engaging with a weekly social club of his fellow progressives. He was a natural lifelong humanitarian and a true hippie at heart. Gone but not forgotten.
Neil will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Friday, February 13th, at 11:30 am. A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date.
