H. Michael Riggs (Mikey) Obituary

Herbert Michael Riggs, age 81, of Mound, Minnesota, passed away peacefully in his home March 19th, surrounded by family.


Born on October 2nd, 1943, in Los Angeles, California, Michael was the beloved son of the late Herbert Elwood Riggs and Judith Riggs (Foster). A Vietnam Veteran, he proudly served in the US Army from 1965-1969, where he was highly decorated, including the military honor of a Purple Heart. During this time he performed search and rescue operations in Huey Helicopters.


Michael was a self proclaimed "aviation junkie." In the early 1970s, Michael founded Seagull Aircraft, which became renowned for producing popular hang gliders. He became a notable figure in the hang gliding community, recognized for his pioneering contributions and innovative designs. His combination of creativity and engineering skills led him to a 25-year career in the toy industry where he innovated for Mattel, Tonka Toys, Tyco, and Estes Rockets. In the early 2000s Michael re-entered the Sport Aviation industry founding Seagull Aerosports where he developed a fully enclosed Ultralight aircraft that was awarded EAA's Innovative New Design and Grand Champion Ultralight award in 2006.


Michael met his loving wife, Linda, in 1996. Together they enjoyed 28 wonderful years. He shared his love of nature and animals (especially cats) with his two daughters. He is survived by his wife, Linda Lester Riggs; children, Sierra Sager (Tom), Stephanie Riggs (Brian Cook); grandson, Vincent McDaniel; his brother, John Riggs (Kriss); their children and grandchildren.


Michael will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be sent to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation at www.t2t.org
