Ramsey, MN - Born August 2nd, 1938 in Anoka, MN to L.A. "Mike" and Harriet Auspos, Mike grew up experiencing a wonderful life that many dream of today — hunting, fishing and exploring around King's island on the Mississippi river in Anoka.
Upon graduation from Anoka High School in 1956 Mike enlisted in the United States Marines and served for three years as an aircraft electrician. After an Honorable Discharge in '59 Mike met and married fellow classmate Nancy Britton-Oliver, attended St. Cloud University and eventually followed his father's footsteps into law enforcement by joining the Anoka Police Dept. Mike then transferred to Coon Rapids PD to work as a detective before eventually heading 'out west' to be the first law enforcement officer in the city of Ramsey, MN. What started out as a 'department of one' in 1974 grew rapidly through Mike's leadership until his retirement in 1997. And that's when the real fun began.
With his wife Patricia by his side they journeyed back-and-forth for 14 years, spending six months in Arizona (where Pat thrived in their highly social retirement community, and Dad hiked in the nearby mountains) and six months at their lake home in northern Minnesota (where Dad thrived in woodsy solitude, and Pat looked forward to visits from family and friends).
Mike moved back to Ramsey fulltime in 2011, keeping busy in his forested backyard, reading, gardening, playing his harmonicas, training a growing community of chipmunks and squirrels, and feeding his many beloved winged and four-footed visitors — birds, ducks, woodchucks, deer and the occasional opossum. And he always enjoyed opining with guests on the patio.
Mike passed away July 1st from natural causes and is preceded by his parents, wife Patricia, sister Kari, and son James. He is survived by sons Charlie, Terry (Liz), Ethan, and Mike, and daughters Amy (Brent) and Melissa (Craig), grandchildren Linnea, Winona, Andrea; Justin, Peter, Chelsea; Tyler, Samantha; Mike Jr., Kaylee; Madison, Anniston, and a growing cadre of great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life for Mike is scheduled on Thursday, July 24th, from 5:00pm-8:00pm at Elmcrest Park; 16303 Quicksilver St. NW, Ramsey, MN 55303. Dinner and beverages will be provided. In lieu of a Viking pyre on the Rum River, a public honorary farewell will take place in the park at 6:30pm.
