Saint Louis Park, MN - Melanie Ann Schumacher, 64, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Stage 4 cancer, having already endured and overcome life-altering challenges and disabilities of living with a traumatic brain injury caused by a pituitary brain tumor 15 years prior. Through every chapter of her life, Melanie embodied resilience, warmth, and an unwavering commitment to love.
To know Melanie was to know joy. She was the friend everyone wanted — the one who listened without judgment and made every gathering feel like home. Her compassion and endless positivity became her signature, a presence so uplifting that her nephew lovingly referred to it as the "Melly Mood." She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for.
Melanie was a devoted and loving mother to Brett and Andrea Schumacher, whose lives were shaped by her steady encouragement, fierce support, and unconditional love. She was the best friend and beloved partner of her husband, Todd Schumacher, sharing a marriage rooted in laughter, loyalty, and deep companionship. Together, they built a life centered on family, friendship, fun, and freedom.
An engaged and generous member of her community, Melanie gave her time freely to local food shelves, the Special Olympics, and numerous other charitable and volunteer efforts. She believed in showing up for others. She welcomed families to her home for her annual Easter egg hunt. She hosted afternoon gatherings for her children and their friends, threw birthday parties that became lifelong memories, and created a home and space where everyone felt included.
Melanie also found deep joy in gardening. Her gardens were vibrant with peonies, indigo, echinacea, lavender, and roses, prioritizing perennials and habitats for wildlife. She was fortunate to learn from Master Gardeners and neighbors, who generously shared their knowledge, encouragement, and even many of their own plants. Melanie treasured their mentorship and friendship, and her gardens became living reflections of that shared wisdom. At her summer cabin, she kept a vegetable garden from spring through fall, where she taught her children how to grow their own food — lessons in patience, stewardship, and self-sufficiency that extended far beyond the soil.
Melanie cherished quiet weekends with her family at their cabin, where time slowed and life felt simple. She loved being out on the lakes, boating with friends and family, spending time near the Oceans, surrounded by sunshine and laughter. For her, a meaningful life was one lived with intention — prioritizing love, happiness, and a stress-free spirit over all else.
After her traumatic brain injury, much of what Melanie once loved changed drastically. Yet even in the face of immense personal loss and daily challenges, her spirit never dimmed. She adapted. She found new adventures. She remained authentically herself. Her strength was not loud, but steady; not boastful, but inspiring. Through hardship, she continued to grow and spread light.
Melanie's legacy is one of compassion, resilience, and joy. She leaves behind a family and community forever better for having known her. Though she will be deeply missed, the "Melly Mood" lives on — in every act of kindness, every welcoming gathering, and every moment of choosing love first.
Her life was a testament to the power of positivity and the beauty of a heart fully given.
