Mary Murley (Johnson) Obituary

Orono - Age 58, of Orono, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2025, surrounded by family. She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Johnson.

Mary spent 30 years at UnitedHealth Group, beginning her career as an actuary and rising through a variety of leadership roles. She received numerous professional awards, but was known for her humility, sharp analytical mind, steady leadership, and unwavering dedication to her teams. She never turned down an opportunity to take on a new challenge, even if it meant flying across the world to places like Brazil, Ireland, and Portugal. Her work fostered lifelong friendships and she always made time for the people she cared about.

Mary's family was at the core of everything she did. She spent countless hours at basketball tournaments, piano recitals, and gymnastics meets cheering on her kids. Her unwavering support continued even as the kids moved to college (at her rival school, no less)-she never missed a phone call or an opportunity to visit. In 2019, Mary and her husband opened Iron Exchange, a brewpub in Maple Plain, where she loved watching her favorite Minnesota sports teams, catching up with familiar faces over a glass of wine, and singing karaoke.

Mary was a passionate world traveler and was always planning the next family adventure. Christmas markets in Prague, tapas in Spain, and a U2 concert in Dublin were some of her favorite travel moments. When at home in Minnesota, she loved welcoming friends and family for game nights and homemade pizza. She found just as much joy at home playing Euchre, lounging by the pool, or walking the dogs as she did traveling.

Above all, Mary was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She put others first, gave generously, and led with warmth and integrity. Her kindness and spirit touched everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Todd; son, Daniel (27); daughters Sara (23) and Anna (21); mother Barbara; sister Theresa (Mike) Sieg; brothers Patrick (Kiyo) Johnson and Lee Johnson; and many other relatives and friends.
