Mary Louise Delehanty Obituary

St. Paul, MN - Mary Louise (Zenner) Delehanty was born on 15 February 1930 in St. Cloud, Minnesota and died in St. Paul on 26 December 2025 at age 95. Mary Lou, as many called her, grew up in Buckman, Minnesota, where her parents, Kilian Zenner and Adela (Brandl) Zenner, operated Zenner's Store, purveyor of "groceries, dry goods, shoes, and notions." She had three younger siblings; Charles Galen Zenner (wife Patricia), who died in 1972; Kathleen (Zenner) Beauchamp (late husband Beau) and Terry Zenner (late wife Janell). Mary Lou graduated from St. Francis High School in Little Falls and trained at the College of St. Theresa in Winona and St. Cloud State Teachers College before accepting a job in 1951 as a first-grade teacher in Montgomery, Minnesota. There she met Robert Delehanty, a farmer in nearby Kilkenny Township. They married on 14 August 1954. Wishing not to raise a family on the farm, Robert, a Second World War veteran, joined the Borchert Ingersoll Company and rose from a sales position in Marshall, Minnesota to become the company's sales manager in St. Paul. Robert and Mary brought up six children in the Page neighborhood in south Minneapolis. Robert died suddenly in 1970; Mary was 40, her children ages 7 through 15. With the unconditional love, can-do optimism, and ready acceptance of challenge and change that were her defining qualities, she guided all her children through high school, college, and beyond, taking various jobs when necessary to make ends meet. Her extended family, neighbors, and community of friends in Annunciation Parish gave her support, strength, and happiness. She was especially grateful as a widow to have been asked to join the GABS, aka the Golf and Bridge Sodality, made up of Annunciation women of her generation. Only a few treasured GABS remain. Mary's joy in life was her family, including parents, aunts, uncles, 80 first cousins, in-laws, and above all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom survive her. Her children are James Delehanty (Jo Ellen Fair), Susan Omans (Judson), Mark Delehanty (Martha Bowman), David Delehanty (Samantha Baab), Jane Delehanty (Mike Anderson), and Steven Delehanty (Wendy Wayne). Her grandchildren are Jack Delehanty (Tania), Tony Delehanty, Mela Shah (Rob Des Jarlais), Sam Omans (Jes Gao), Alex Omans (Alli), Nathan Omans, Eileen Delehanty (Jack Distel), Dhanya Delehanty (Don LouisCharles), Ravi Delehanty, Joe Delehanty (Natalie Berner), Tom Delehanty (Bryan Duke), Lydia Delehanty, Will Anderson (Jasmine), Roz Anderson, Elena Anderson, Laura Lou Delehanty (Derrick Magnotta) and Owen Delehanty (Gavin). Her great-grandchildren are Sylvie, Louis, Edith, Kilian, Lachlan, Wyatt, Sloan, Eloise, and Felix. Visitation will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday 5 January in the vestibule of the Church of the Annunciation, 509 W. 54th St., Minneapolis, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00. An offsite luncheon will follow Mass, details provided at the church.. Flowers are welcome, but consider instead a donation to Our Lady of Peace Hospice in St. Paul, to which the family is grateful, or the Annunciation Hope and Healing Fund of the Catholic Community Foundation of Minnesota.
