Marilyn Vatsaas (Carlson) Obituary

Mpls - Marilyn Lucille Vatsaas of Minneapolis, age 94, passed away peacefully on November 1. Marilyn was born in Stockholm Township near Cokato on July 31, 1931, the 4th of 5 children. After the death of her father, her family moved to Minneapolis, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School. Marilyn was intrigued by a new field called Occupational Therapy, and she graduated in the U of MN's first OT class. She created and was the director of Sister Kenny Institute's OT department during the polio epidemic. In June 1955, Swedish Marilyn married Norwegian Chris and they raised four children. She worked as an OT at Dowling School for many years. Marilyn was a loving wife, mom, grandma and great-grandma. She was creative, innovative, generous, with a gift of hospitality and connecting people. She was an active lifelong member of First Evangelical Free Church in Minneapolis. Survived by children Janet Schubert (Thomas); Bradley (Lynette), Richard (Cheryl), Mark (Bethel); brother Ralph Carlson; brother-in-law Robert Fallt; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren (#19 due soon). Preceded in death by Christian, loving husband of 65 years; her parents; siblings Carol Carlson (Marvin), Richard Carlson (Lynn), Margaret Fallt; sister-in-law Marcia Carlson. Memorial service will be held at First Evangelical Free Church, 5150 Chicago Ave S. Thursday, November 13. Visitation 10:00, Service 11:00. Luncheon to follow.
