Margaret E. Sannerud Obituary

Ham Lake - Sannerud, Margaret E. "Betty" of Ham Lake, MN passed away at the age of 95 on February 12, 2025, in the house where she lived for over 75 years. She was born May 29, 1929, in Minneapolis, MN to Hans and Emma Moe. Betty was proud of her Norwegian heritage as a daughter of Norwegian immigrants. Betty grew up in Cedar-Riverside until her family moved to the farm in Ham Lake in 1938. She graduated from Anoka High in 1946, then attended Augsburg College where she met her husband Al. Betty also attended St. Cloud Teachers College where she earned her elementary teaching license. Al and Betty were married March 21, 1951. Betty began teaching in the Richfield school district as a first-grade teacher. Due to the post war baby boom population growth her classroom was relegated to the stage of the auditorium where her only technology was a blackboard. She then taught at South Saint Paul and at the Glen Cary School. Later, she was a substitute teacher at McKinley and Johnsville Elementaries. Betty believed in living her faith through her service to others as a Befriender, 4H leader, support with the family business and fabulous hospitality. She was always ready with ice cream, a cookie, or a sticky roll. She had a passion for feeding the poor, clothing the needy and housing the homeless. Al and Betty willingly opened their home and farm to those in need including family & friends, refugees and missionaries, Bikes 4 Kids, and many others. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Hans and Emma Moe; husband Alfred; infant son Daniel; infant granddaughter Kristen; brother-in-law Curtis Sannerud and sister-in-law Lois Bartel. Betty is survived by her brothers-in-law: Eugene (Sharon), G. Peder (Sandy); children: Robert (Kim) of Edina, Paul (Peggy) of Winona, Susan (Timothy) Savarese of Ham Lake, James (Mary) of Grand Marias; grandchildren: Erin (Carsten), Eric (Rachel), Kevin, Bryn, David, Kiri, and Haakon, and great grandchildren: Keegan, Paxton, and Rose Marie. Betty was the most kind and generous person and taught all who knew her about service and love. She was a cherished friend of many, loved by all and will be greatly missed. A memorial service is scheduled for April 26th, 11:00 am at Faith Lutheran Church, 11115 Hanson Blvd, Coon Rapids. Visitation two hours prior to the service at 9:00am. Memorials can be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Children's Shelter of Cebu, Bikes 4 Kids, or Lutheran World Relief. Betty has donated her body to the Anatomy Bequest Program at the University of Minnesota.
