It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Louise Newman Meyerson at the age of 86. After a courageous struggle with heart disease, Louise passed away on July 23rd, 2026 in Minneapolis, MN. She died peacefully, in the company of loving family.

Louise was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio and she moved back to the Midwest in her 70s. She spent most of her adult life living in and around New York City. A lifelong spinner of tales and lover of the performing arts, she acted in Cleveland's Children's Theater program and worked at the Cain Park Theater as an adolescent and teenager, before moving to the East Coast to attend college. Majoring in Literature and Drama, she proved to be a gifted scholar, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar and winning a prestigious Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for her graduate studies at Columbia University.

Louise married Dr. Arthur T. Meyerson in 1962. They raised two children together before divorcing after 20 plus years of marriage. During her early years as a mother and wife, Louise taught undergraduate literature and drama courses at SUNY-Stonybrook and NYU's School of Continuing Education. She devoted her later adult years to part-time writing and community education projects. An especially passionate advocate for patient rights and healthcare education, she received awards for her patient advocacy work from the National Thyroid Foundation and the Westchester County Self-Help Clearinghouse in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2016, facing mounting health problems, Louise left her beloved Manhattan and moved to Minneapolis to be closer to her adult children and grandchildren. There she adapted quickly to life at her South Minneapolis retirement community, The Kenwood. She made new friends; served on the community's resident council; wrote for the resident newsletter; participated in many groups and activities; and spent her free time talking and writing about literature, drama, poetry, philosophy, and politics with family and friends. She also read the NY Times and watched the PBS News Hour every day.

In the end, Louise will be remembered for her intellect and her playful and imaginative spirit. She dedicated herself to connecting meaningfully with other people and loved sharing her passion for reading, writing, theater, and conversation.

She is survived by her children Peter and Jessica (and their spouses Kate and Michael); her grandson Eric (and his wife, Ashley, and children, Maisy and Jude); her grandson Owen (with whom she shared a love of poetry); and her brother, Charles Newman (and his wife Linda).

Services and Legacy Gifts: A celebration of Louise's life will be held at The Kenwood in South Minneapolis on Saturday, August 8th at 2 p.m. Donations in her honor should be directed to Fellowship of Reconciliation or Habitat for Humanity of Minnesota.
