Otsego - Lorraine Freadhoff Cecil died on November 30, 2025 in Otsego, MN. She leaves a legacy of commitment to education and civic activism.
Lorraine was born in Lamoure, ND on November 23, 1928. She grew up on a farm in Nortonville, ND where she attended a one-room country school. In high school, everything changed when the teachers had a fundraiser to raise money for electricity for the school - now they had lights.
She graduated from Jamestown College in 1950 and began her lifelong career as a passionate advocate for education, especially for women and girls, with her first teaching job in Wolford, ND. At her next job in Arnegard, ND her future husband Jim Cecil wooed her with chocolate turtles. They were married in 1953, surrounded by lilacs. Lorraine and Jim immediately hopped into their new car to drive to Wisconsin for their honeymoon- driving carefully to avoid any police attention, since neither of them had driver's licenses.
Lorraine shared her love for literature- and made lifelong friends - as she taught in Twin Valley, Crookston and Brooklyn Center. Lorraine and her family moved to Bemidji in 1964, where she completed a Master's degree in English. She taught at Bemidji State University and then became the coordinator of the new BSU external studies program. She set up extension courses throughout northern Minnesota and made customized study plans for students from as far away as Mexico. She never missed the classroom during this part of her career because it was so rewarding to expand access to education. Lorraine remained connected to BSU - and its hockey program -- even after she retired after 27 years of service, and was named an Outstanding Alumni in 2006. She continued her interest in education after retirement by leading literature courses for her peers in a lifelong learning program in Arizona and taking courses in constitutional law and other topics.
Lorraine was also passionate about community involvement and politics. She was an active member of her political party for more than five decades. Her interest began early in life. "If you were a Freadhoff you knew about politics," she said, noting that divisions between the Nonpartisan League and mainstream parties in North Dakota led to spirited family debates.
During her decades of political activism, she served in many roles, gaining honors and awards. She was thrilled to serve as a delegate to a national convention in 1988 and to cast a vote as a member of the Electoral College. And she never hesitated to compliment the hard-working volunteers from the opposite political party.
When her children were growing up, Lorraine volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and den mother for Cub Scouts and served as a very proactive organizer of carpools. A great supporter of theater, she wrote reviews of performances at the Paul Bunyan Playhouse for the Pioneer.
An avid and ambitious reader, Lorraine traveled many times to Europe and enjoyed trips to Australia, India, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
Lorraine is survived by her children Tom (Louise) in Livingston MT, Jim (Kristin) in Rogers, MN and Catherine in Bangladesh and three grandchildren, Branden Cecil, Erin Cecil and Blair Cecil. She was predeceased by her husband Jim Cecil and her brothers John Freadhoff and Karl Freadhoff.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 5, 2025, at ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER CATHOLIC CHURCH ( 7180 Hemlock Ln N, Maple Grove) , with visitation one hour prior. A celebration of her life will be held in Bemidji at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Lorraine's family to establish a scholarship at Bemidji State University in her name.
