St. Paul - Passed away Dec. 16, 2025 at Heritage Assisted Living in St. Paul at age 88. Survived by sons Steve and wife Kathryn Augustine, Erik Helgen and wife Marie McKeighan, step daughter Rachel Brown and spouse Peter Watkins, six grandchildren: Lila, Oskar, Lucas and Nathaniel Helgen, Elsa and Will Anderson, sister Lanny Peterson, and former wife Judy Helgen. Born Dec. 25, 1936 in Chicago, grew up in Emmetsburg Iowa, attended St Olaf College, and earned his PhD in chemistry at Yale University. Preceded in death by wife Janet Helgen (2012) and brother Bill Helgen (2025), stepchildren Melissa Brown (1993) and Marshal Brown (2019). Full notice later.
