Lester James Cannon Obituary
Minneapolis, MN - Lester Cannon age 80, of Minneapolis died peacefully June 27, 2025 surrounded by family and friends, of complications related to Cardiac Amyloidosis.
Lester was a loving life partner, father, grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by parents Lorraine and Earl Cannon. He is survived by life partner Nancy Lehrman, Roslyn Cannon, daughter Lisa Carter(Randy), Brian Sandifer Sr., grandchildren Brian Sandifer Jr., Kaharri Carter and Chase Carter, many beloved relatives and friends. Lester's family and friends were his heart and soul. Each, in their own way, exchanged a piece of them with him. Each one had their own special relationship with Lester. Each gave him the strength and love that gave him his wings.
The family sends a very special heartfelt thanks to Drs. Pamela Kolacz. Rebecca Cogswell, Markus Meyer, Jacob Manske, Henri Roukoz, Clarence Shannon and their assistants Elli J. and Taylor Hart. They all gave Lester their utmost compassionate care and respect. They were always there for him. They made sure his journey was smooth, safe and sound. Not many patients can call their medical team friends.
The family truly appreciates the care given to Lester by AccentCare Hospice and Home Health Care.
David Frank, through Nami Harris and Marlene Mosley, gave Lester the space to "be". David gave Lester laughter, deep discussions and friendship and endearing care. David and Lester developed a mutual love and respect.
After graduating from West High School in Minneapolis, Lester went to the University of Minnesota where he became a force to be reckoned with. Lester was at the U during the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements. Lester fought hard for racial and social justice. He became the first Afro-American Action Committee President. Lester could just as easily speak to Black Power Leader Stokely Carmichael as he could University President Malcolm Moos. Lester was an integral part in establishing the first African American Studies Program at the University. Lester never stopped being active and immersed in local, country and global politics and issues. Lester was a fierce civil rights and social justice advocate.
Lester went on to become one of the country's elite Professional Conformation Dog Show Handlers. Lester was lucky! He found and lived his passion. He studied and trained his craft constantly. Lester worked hard at showing and caring for every animal in his care. Given the ability to travel across the country and through the animals, Lester developed many, many, many friendships lasting long after he retired. Thanks to all that believed in Lester.
