St Louis Park, Minnesota - Laverne C. Wheeler, age 92, of St. Louis Park (also Edina and Chaska), passed away on Jan. 21, 2026. A chemist, salesman, veteran, husband, father, grandfather, & humanitarian. Laverne's life was one of service, integrity, kindness, and love. Born March 27, 1933, in Woodland, MI, he was a child of the Depression who never lost his drive to improve the world and help those around him. A top graduate of Manchester College, he served in the US Army and was loaned to the USAF in Europe during the Cold War. There, he performed critical chemical analysis on former Nazi airfields, ensuring the pavement could support NATO jets — a quiet but vital contribution to global democracy. He returned to the US to work at Dow Chemical, earning a patent, before spending 30 years in the building industry with Dow & Edward Sales... All the while meeting the Special Needs of his family with love and dedication. Alongside his wife of 70+ years, Babette "Babs" (Hartzler), they founded Babette Wheeler Custom Travel, taking thousands of youth choir members to Europe. In retirement, he (and Babs) were named one of KARE 11's "Eleven Who Care" for his work fighting hunger, by hosting dinners and gathering donations of food and money to feed the most needy in the state. A deacon & member of Colonial Church of Edina for over 40 years, he walked with Christ and lived His example. Survived by wife Babs; children Kathy (Mark), Julie (Steve), Randy, & Loren (Loni); grandson Roman and a legacy of kindness and service. Preceded in death by parents and siblings. Memorial service at Meetinghouse Church (formerly Colonial Church), Edina. Saturday, March 21st, 1:00 p.m. with reception and refreshments to follow. Event will be live streamed for those who can't attend.
