Edina, MN - There are some people who make the world brighter simply by the way they live. Judy A. Harvala Kovarik Henderson was one of those people.

It is with profound sadness that we share Judy's sudden passing on June 27, 2026, following an unexpected accident. She left this world surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of faith, kindness, creativity, and unwavering devotion to the people she loved.

Judy's story began on August 1st, 1944 in Park Rapids, Minnesota, where she grew up with a curious mind and a love of learning. She graduated from Park Rapids High School and earned scholarships to the University of Minnesota Duluth. Although she chose to leave college to begin a family, she never gave up on education. Decades later, after raising her children, Judy fulfilled a lifelong dream by earning her bachelor's degree from Metropolitan State University at the age of 53—a testament to her determination and belief that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.

That quiet determination became a hallmark of her life.

For 44 wonderful years, Judy shared an extraordinary marriage with her husband and soulmate, Don E. Henderson. Together they built a home filled with laughter, faith, adventure, and unconditional love. Whether traveling together or enjoying the beauty close to home, they embraced life side by side. Among their favorite adventures was an unforgettable snowmobile journey across Minnesota, traveling from Iowa to the Canadian border—a trip they often remembered with great joy.

While Judy devoted herself to her family, she never stopped growing. She was an avid reader, a gifted writer, and someone who found beauty in words. One of her high school teachers, John Hassler, became an acclaimed novelist. Years later, life came full circle when Judy had the privilege of working alongside him, organizing his manuscripts and writing. Judy also became a published author herself, quietly achieving another lifelong dream.

She believed that beauty belonged in everyday life. Friends knew her for her magnificent hosta gardens, lovingly cultivated season after season. Family knew her sewing room, where scraps of fabric became treasured quilts. Judy affectionately called herself a "scrap quilter," delighting in creating something beautiful from pieces others might overlook. It was, perhaps, a reflection of how she lived—finding beauty, purpose, and possibility everywhere she looked.

Family remained the center of Judy's world. She was a devoted mother whose encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love shaped the lives of her children. Becoming a grandmother and great-grandmother brought her immeasurable joy. She celebrated every milestone, treasured every visit, and delighted in the everyday moments that became lifelong memories.

Her faith guided every chapter of her life. Judy quietly served others without seeking recognition. For seventeen years she lovingly crafted mission quilts for Lutheran World Relief and Normandale House knowing that each quilt might become a source of warmth and hope for someone she would never meet. Her life reflected her belief that simple acts of kindness could change the world.

Those who knew Judy will remember her gentle spirit, caring heart, quiet strength, and endless generosity. They will remember the warmth of her welcome, the beauty of her gardens, the comfort of her quilts, the wisdom of her words, and the steadfast faith that shaped everything she did. Most of all, they will remember how deeply she loved.

Judy's greatest accomplishment was not found in her degrees, her writing, her gardens, or even the quilts she stitched. It was found in the people she loved so faithfully and who loved her in return.

She is lovingly survived by her soulmate, Don E. Henderson; her children, Angela, Amy (John), and Mike; her beloved grandchildren, Rachael, Elijah, Charles, and Alaina; her great-grandchildren, Decker and Eva; her siblings, Jean, Harvey, Joe (Pam), Connie (Dick), and Jacob; her extended and honorary family, Sue (Jay) and Dar (Joel); honorary grandchildren, Brett (Becca), Taryn, and Madison; honorary great-granddaughter, Ava; and many nieces, nephews, dear friends, and loved ones whose lives were forever enriched by knowing her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugo B. and Lila Harvala; her siblings, Floyd and Adelyn; and honorary family members Clayton, Darryl, and Timothy.

A Celebration of Judy's Life will be held at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina, Minnesota, on July 31st, visitation 10:00am with services at 11:00am where family and friends will gather to celebrate a life beautifully lived.

Judy often made the world more beautiful without asking for recognition. Her gardens will bloom again each spring. Her quilts will continue to warm others. Her words will continue to be read. Her acts of kindness will live on in the lives she quietly touched. But it is the love she planted in the hearts of her family and friends that will remain her greatest legacy.

Memorials may be given in Judy's honor to Lutheran World Relief, Normandale House, or Normandale Lutheran Church, organizations that reflected her lifelong commitment to faith, service, and caring for others.
