Edina, MN - After a lengthy battle with melanoma John R. Sorensen, age 77, passed away on July 2, 2025 at his home in Excelsior with his loving wife, of 54 years, Cindy and his son Todd at his side. John was born in Wayzata but moved to San Diego in elementary school where he and Cindy first met. John returned to Minnesota to attend St. Olaf College after which he enlisted in 5th Special Forces Group of the Army Green Berets. Following his military service, John owned a real estate brokerage in San Diego and he and Cindy raised two sons, Erik, who died at the age of 20 from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Todd who lives in Minnetonka with his wife, Kara, along with their sons Scott and Brody.

While owning his real estate company, John obtained a law degree and began a law firm from which he retired in 2016 and he and Cindy moved to Minnesota to be with "the boys". John was always active in his community and served as President of the South San Diego Association of Realtors, President of the Del Mar Rotary Club and as a National Vice President of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. John was preceded in death by his son Erik, his parents Rev. Dr. Everett and Bunny Sorensen, and sister Jeanette Marshall.

A memorial service will be held at Wayzata Community Church on July 25, at 10:00 AM.
