Eden Prairie - James Edward Mitchell IV - known to those who loved him as Jim or Jamie - passed away on April 1, 2026, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, after a brief illness. He was 54 years old. Born on February 3, 1972, in Chicago, Illinois, Jim grew up to become the kind of person who made every room happier and every life he touched a little better.

Jim graduated from Minnehaha Academy and the University of Minnesota and built a successful career in IT management and consulting. Jim's work took him around the world and he never met a culture he didn't want to explore or a meal he didn't want to try. He made friends everywhere he went and was the kind of person who could build his own computer from scratch and still be the life of the party.

But for all his love of travel, Jim's greatest joy was closer to home. In 2008, he married Sarah at the Naniboujou Lodge on Lake Superior, and together they built an amazing family, welcoming daughters Sadie Elisabeth in 2009 and Emily Frances in 2011. His greatest joy was his family, and he delighted in sharing his love of Star Wars and Marvel movies with his girls. Jim never met a dog he didn't like and he adored his dogs Lewis, Walter and Bear.

Jim's kindness and generosity were legendary. A former server himself, he believed in always leaving a large tip, a small gesture that spoke volumes about his generous spirit and giving nature. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Special Olympics and never missed an opportunity to show kindness to others. His sense of humor could make you laugh until you cried and his running inside jokes could last for years.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sarah Mitchell; his daughters, Sadie and Emily Mitchell; his parents, Karen and James Mitchell III; his sister, Katherine (Katie) Arnold and her husband, Carl Arnold; and his nieces, Amelia and Eloise Arnold. He is also survived by countless friends from every corner of the world who were fortunate enough to know him.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026 at the Campus Club at the University of Minnesota from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Jim are invited to contribute to his daughters' futures through www.ugift529.com/.
