Austin, TX - Jack Edward Meyer, 82, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in Austin, Texas surrounded by his family. Born on August 4, 1943, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jack lived a life marked by adventure, connection, and an enduring commitment to his family, friends and professional pursuits.
Jack studied business at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he earned both his bachelor's degree and MBA, and met his wife, Mary Lou. His academic foundation laid the groundwork for a lifelong career in the medical device industry. Starting in sales, Jack's natural ability to connect with people propelled him into leadership roles. He ultimately served as CEO of several startup medical device companies where he particularly enjoyed building teams full of talented people, many of whom became close friends. Even after retirement, Jack remained deeply engaged as a mentor and board member, generously sharing his experience and insight with the next generation of leaders.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jack was a devoted husband of 60 years to Mary Lou Meyer and an engaged father to his sons Chris and Mike. Work took the family across the US including stints living in Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., San Diego, Dallas, Laguna Beach, Ann Arbor, and Minneapolis over the years. He took great joy in watching his family grow and cherished time spent with his daughters-in-law, Lacey and Christian. His legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren: Cooper, Cameron, Wren, Bridger, Bodhi, Story, and Boone - with each of whom he had a special relationship as "Papa Jack".
He is also remembered by his brother Tom, whose friendship he appreciated deeply. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Dorothy Meyer.
Jack's zest for life extended far and wide. He and Mary Lou were avid travelers who embraced adventure at every turn. As a young family, they regularly took road trips to ski or camp. Later in life they explored the US & Canada by motorhome for over a decade, escaping Minneapolis winters in Borrego Springs, CA. Over the years they embarked on international travels across Europe and Asia, often with good friends as traveling companions. Jack found joy in nature through fishing - whether that be fly fishing in mountain rivers, surfcasting from the beach in Florida or on the lakes & rivers of Minnesota and Wisconsin. Jack loved to stay active on his bicycle, often riding the bike paths of Minneapolis as a workout and opportunity to recharge.
Known for his curiosity in others, his ability to listen, and a warm sense of humor, Jack had an extraordinary gift for making others feel seen and valued. Whether among lifelong friends or new acquaintances, he built lasting connections that enriched every chapter of his life. Together, Jack and Mary Lou loved to entertain and socialize. They developed a deep cadre of friends everywhere they lived and were always quick to find time to socialize with them. Highlights include parties with post-midnight omelets in San Diego, family BBQs and swimming in Dallas, dinners with many Cobalt friends in Minneapolis and building new meaningful relationships in Austin. Connection and community were hallmarks of Jack's life.
Jack was comforted during his battle with ALS by having the friendship and support of those who meant so much to him. He drew energy and happiness from being able to spend time with so many during his illness. He often remarked how lucky he was to have some control over the writing of the final chapter of his wonderful life, being present and purposeful about how he lived that time between his diagnosis and death. The clarity of what was to come enabled him to very directly engage in his loving friendships. He will be deeply missed by so many.
The family will hold a private service for Jack. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Jack's honor may do so at the ALS Association or Hospice Austin.
May Jack Edward Meyer's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
