Monticello - Age 90 of Monticello died on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the St. Cloud Hospital. Hib was born November 20, 1935, in Valley City, ND to Samuel and Jean (Zetterberg) Hill. He graduated from Valley City High School in 1954. Hib was united in marriage to Patricia "Pat" Hockenberry in 1954. Hib received his teaching degree from North Dakota State University. He and Pat moved to Red Lake where Hib began his teaching and basketball coaching career. After 2 years in Red Lake, they moved to Monticello where they made their home for the next 65 years. Hib taught Math and coached boys' basketball in Monticello before moving on to Robbinsdale Senior High School. Hib remained there as a math teacher and basketball coach until its closure in 1982. At that time, he moved to Robbinsdale Cooper High School. Hib retired from Cooper High School to continue teaching in United Arab Emirates. He taught for the American Schools in Abu Dhabi for 5 years. Hib coached boys' basketball throughout his career. His teams at Robbinsdale High School were known for their strong showing in conference, section, and state tournaments. Hib also coached football, boys track and badminton during his career. He retired from his teaching and coaching career in Abu Dhabi. Hib enjoyed numerous years of refereeing high school football. He and Pat spent many years traveling the world and the US. They enjoyed camping and motorcycling throughout Minnesota. Hib was known to gather a group of teachers and head out on motorcycles for all parts of the US. He also enjoyed years of golfing in men's leagues, volunteering at the Monticello Help Center and serving meals at Higher Grounds, a men's homeless shelter in Minneapolis. Survived by children, Scott (Beth) Hill, Scooter (Karen) Hill, Nick (Lauri) Hill and Jeannie (Bill) Sonsteby; siblings, Jean (Michael) Mullen, Mark (Cindy) Hill; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by wife, Patricia; parents, Jean and Samuel Hill; in-laws, Berniece and Vernon Hockenberry; daughter, Patricia Jo Humphrey; grandson, Michael Hill; brother, Rev. Nicholas Hill; and sisters, Mary Mountford and Peggy Pfohl. Hib will be deeply missed by many and carried in the hearts of his family. Memorials are preferred to Monticello Food Shelf. Memorial service Friday, June 12, 2026 at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel, 250 E Broadway St, Monticello, MN. Burial following at Riverside Cemetery in Monticello, MN.
