Gregor W. Pinney Obituary

Mpls - Gregor Pinney died on October 14th, 2025 in Minneapolis. He was born on October 19, 1936, in Lewisburg Pennsylvania, lived a life defined by curiosity, dedication, and honesty. He graduated from New Castle High School in 1954 and went on to earn his degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1958. After college, he served in the U.S. Air Force before beginning a lifelong career in journalism. His early reporting work began at the Longmont Times-Call in Longmont, Colorado. In 1961, he married Carolyn Taylor, beginning a marriage that would last nearly four decades. In 1962, he pursued and completed a master's degree in journalism at Columbia University in New York City, the same year he and Carolyn welcomed their first daughter, Christine. The following year, in 1963, he joined The Denver Post as a reporter, marking the start of a distinguished career in newspaper journalism. In 1968, he was hired by the Minneapolis Tribune (now the Minnesota Star Tribune), where he worked for nearly three decades. That same year, his second daughter, Andrea, was born. Over the years, his reporting took him from the St. Paul bureau to covering education, where he reported on school desegregation in Minneapolis during the 1970s.In 1973–74, he was honored with a prestigious Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University — an acknowledgment of his excellence and integrity as a journalist. After a year at Harvard, he returned to the Star Tribune, where he continued to take on significant beats, including state health insurance debates and higher education policy in Minnesota. He also served his colleagues as secretary-treasurer of the Newspaper Guild unit at the Star Tribune from 1994 to 1995. He retired in 1997, closing a remarkable career marked by professionalism, fairness, and a passion for public service through journalism. After Carolyn's passing in 1999, he made his new home overlooking Grass Lake in South Minneapolis, where he built a new workshop and a well-appointed utility shed — a testament to his love of craftsmanship and creating things with his hands. In retirement, he remained deeply engaged with his community and his lifelong love of learning. He served on citizen committees with Metro Transit to help develop the light rail system in Minneapolis, contributing his thoughtful perspective to one of the city's most significant public projects. Always eager to learn something new, he took classes at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, where he studied computer skills and graphic design. A longtime member of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, he also volunteered on Sundays, assisting with the distribution of hearing aids to members of the congregation — a small act of service that reflected his kindness, patience, and quiet generosity. He is survived by his two daughters, Andrea and Christine; his sister, Lynna Baker and brother, Nelson along with his nephews, Kent and Kyle Baker. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Meryl and Leslie Pinney; his brother, Morgan and beloved wife, Carolyn. Funeral Service 11am, Wednesday, November 5th at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, 511 Groveland Avenue, Minneapolis with visitation one hour prior to service. Interment Lakewood Cemetery.
