George Lawrence Maus Obituary
Mpls - 72, of Minneapolis, died April 23, 2026 after a brief but brave battle with illness. He spent his career and life as a gracious and kind listener who never forgot your name. Knowing him made all of us better people.
George was born on March 21,1954 and was adopted by Isadore (Mickey) and Deloris (Minnie) Maus of Minneapolis. He was welcomed by his older brother Thomas, and later his younger brother Michael was born to the family. He grew up in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, where he got into mischief with his lifelong friends, and spent summers with his brothers at the family cabin on Lake Sarah. He attended DeLaSalle Catholic School before graduating from West High School in 1972.
After graduating, George went to work for his dad at the Court Bar and Cafe downtown. He moved to Las Vegas in 1985, where he managed events at the MGM Grand Casino. He returned to Minnesota in 1988 and continued his career in the hospitality industry, helping launch the North Shore Scenic Railroad in the early 1990s. In 1994 he began his career as general manager of Mackenzie Pub in Minneapolis, where he worked for the rest of his life.
There, he was a hardworking, funny and steady presence for everyone blessed enough to encounter him. He remembered birthdays and anniversaries and was always there for conversation and advice. Everyone who knew him loved him deeply and counted on him.
He had an encyclopedic knowledge of tennis and read the newspaper front to back every day. He loved dogs, being on the boat, Irish whiskey on the rocks, heading up north and his many, many friends. He met his partner, Abby Simons in 2009, and they enjoyed 17 years together, raising their dog Bianca and taking trips to Mexico, Alaska and many cities in between. He was immediately welcomed into her family, and they adored him.
George cared for people from a deep and honest place in his heart. His energy is irreplaceable. In his honor, pick up some litter, keep a dog treat in your pocket and let the people in your life know how much they mean to you.
We are so grateful for you, George. You meant so much to us. (Aroo!)
He is survived by his partner Abby Simons and their dog Brynn of Minneapolis, brother Thomas (Connie) Maus of Coon Rapids, Niece Carrie Thorstensen (Cody) of Andover, Nephew Rick Maus (Kris) of Cottage Grove, and several great-nieces and nephews. Also, his best friends Roy Nelson (Amy), Brian and Debbie MacKenzie, John Christiansen (Miriam), Pete Hankes (Cheryl), Jeff Ulku (Marcia), Dave Moshou, Bret Shogren (Kristen), Lohn Barth, Katy Laswell and Melissa and John Sorrick, among so many others.
Additionally, Sally Proctor (Ed Ostervich) of Braymer, Mo.; Doug Simons (Tracy) of Alta, Ia. And Cade Mayberry of Braymer, Mo.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Michael Maus, stepmother Patricia Maus, honorary brother Cory Mayberry and his beloved dogs Gunther and Bianca.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses of Methodist Hospital who cared for him, to his family who prayed for him and to the friends who were by his side up to the end.
