George Tait Anderberg Obituary

Eagan, MN - March 10, 1947 - December 28, 2025

George Tait Anderberg passed peacefully at home on December 28, 2025, surrounded by his wife and children. He was born on March 10, 1947, in Warsaw, Indiana, to Russell F. and Mary Violet (Tait) Anderberg.

George was united in marriage to Mary Kathryn Hillmer on June 7, 1969, in Long Prairie, Minnesota, beginning a lifelong partnership grounded in friendship, loyalty, and love.

George graduated from Marmion Military Academy, earned his undergraduate degree from St. Cloud State University, and completed a Master's degree in Theology at St. John's University. After several early career paths, George found his calling in pastoral counseling. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon in 1984 and began his ministry as a chaplain at Cambridge State Hospital. He went on to spend the majority of his career serving as a chaplain with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, offering compassion, guidance, and dignity to countless individuals. Following retirement, George continued his life of service through Food For The Poor, raising funds to support communities in Central America and Haiti.

George was known for his gentle presence, quick wit, and ability to make people feel truly seen and heard. He enjoyed trivia, singing and playing guitar, telling jokes—especially puns. George loved traveling, always eager to learn, connect, and share a laugh.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Kay; children Melissa (Bryan) Walworth, Annikka (Peter) Wilson, and Timothy (Kathryn) Anderberg; and cherished grandchildren Ian and Alec Walworth, Bennett and Hannah Wilson, and Ella and Tait Anderberg. Also survived by his sister-in-law Teresa Hillmer (Mary Ellen) and their daughters Kathryn and Clare, brother-in-law John Hillmer (Sandra), sister-in-law Lorraine Anderberg, brother-in-law Jack Macleary, cousins Martha Vanourek, Susan Finney, Douglas Gold, and many nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by parents Russell and Violet Anderberg; parents-in-law Herman and Kathryn Hillmer; brothers Russell Anderberg and Peter Anderberg; sisters Nancy Murray and Donna Macleary; sister-in-law Linda Anderberg; brothers-in-law Robert Murray and Herman Hillmer; and aunt and uncle Mary Jane and George Gold.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 23rd, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community, 4537 3rd Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55419. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by Mass at 11:00 AM.
