Elmer Aagard Obituary

Aagard, Elmer age 84, of Chanhassen, passed away on June 5, 2010. Elmer grew up on a farm in Deer Creek Minnesota and is a graduate of Deer Creek High School. He joined the Navy during WWII. A proud veteran, he served during the American Theater in the Pacific, the Asiatic Pacific, WWII Victory, China Service and the occupation of Japan. Of particular importance was his service during the Bikini Atomic Bomb tests. He was honorably discharged in 1950. After his Naval service, Elmer moved to Cook Minnesota where he played baseball on several farm teams, met his future wife Charlotte Francis and began work in the lumber industry. Elmer and Charlotte married in 1957 and moved to Excelsior. They had one daughter, Pamela. He continued to work as a manager in the lumber industry for his career. Elmer's last position before retirement was as real estate manager for Lyman Lumber. Elmer enjoyed his retirement years golfing and fishing. But perhaps the best day during these years was the trip to the WWII memorial in Washington DC. The trip was organized by the local community for the veterans. In his words, Elmer said, "a bright day for some old guys." He always had a smile, a joke and a fish tale to tell. Friends will remember him for his warmth and generosity. He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Hoffman of Oakland, CA; grandchildren, Courtney (22) and Nathan (15); sisters, Marion Truenow of Saulk Rapids, Margaret Jobe of Fenton, MI; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Elmer is predeceased by his wife, Charlotte and parents, Anna and Anchor Aagard. At the request of Elmer, no services will be held. Donations may be made to VFW National Headquarters, 406 W. 34 St. Kansas City, MO 64111. The honor guard veteran salute will take place at 1:45 PM on Monday, June 14 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery where interment will take place. Please take a moment to remember Elmer at that time.
