Douglas James Grow Obituary

Mpls - Douglas James Grow (1947-2026), son of Margaret Grow Sonntag and Willard (Bill) Grow, died from cancer, peacefully at home in Minneapolis, on July 8, 2026. Doug Grow loved hearing and telling other people's stories, baseball, music, and his family.

Doug enjoyed talking and listening to everyone from celebrity athletes and political icons to the person in line with him at the grocery store. He began his newspaper career as a boy delivering papers with his dog in Watertown, SD. After graduating in Journalism from the University of Missouri, he thoughtfully shared those stories in the Milwaukee Journal, the St. Louis Post Dispatch, The Star Tribune, and MinnPost.

Doug's love for baseball was fostered by his Uncle Duke Grow, who would drive him from Watertown to Minneapolis for Twins games and who gave him a year's worth of Sporting News to read on his two-day honeymoon. After retiring from The Star Tribune, he wrote his second book, "We're Gonna Win, Twins!" and a six part series of hand-written books about the adventures of a baseball team, the Rainbows, starring his grandsons.

Doug married his high school senior prom date, Sheila Bubb Grow, with whom he shared 57 years of marriage with patience, fun, and laughter. He always said his greatest accomplishments were his two daughters, Laura and Shelly. Laura is happily married to Shawn and Shelly is happily married to her husband, Dan Hilliard. Doug loved spending time with his twin grandsons, Theo and Sam, who share his love for sports, especially baseball. He was blessed with a beloved sister, Mary Main (Frank); brothers-in-law Steve Bubb (Nancy) and Dr. Mike Bubb (Teresa); six nieces, Buffie, Katie, Elizabeth, Rosie, Nellie, Maggie, and one nephew, Ilan, their families; and his stepsisters and brothers (and families) who entered and nourished his life as an adult. A special thank you to the dear friends and relatives (too numerous to be named but cherished) who enriched his life with their generous love and support.

Rest in Peace. You lived your life in service to others, sharing your kindness, joy, and infectious laughter.
