Bloomington, MN - Dr. David Charles Dahlgren (83) was born in 1942, in Roseau, Minnesota, to parents Hilding and Margaret Dahlgren, and grew up in Washington, D.C. He returned to Minnesota after high school, graduating from Gustavas Adolphus College in 1962. He went on to complete medical school at the University of Minnesota in 1966. During medical school, he reconnected with U of M undergrad Merrie Kyrklund. The two had met as teenagers at Augustana Lutheran Church in D.C., where both the Dahlgren and Kyrklund families were members. They went on to marry in November of 1966. Dave completed an internship at San Francisco General Hospital and was then drafted by the U.S. Army and served as a general medical officer in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. After a year in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Merrie and Dave settled in Minneapolis, where daughter Sarah was born in 1970. Dave completed his radiology residency in Minneapolis in 1973 and in the same year the family moved to Kalispell, Montana, where daughter Kari was born in 1974. The Dahlgrens then spent a year living near Manchester, England, in 1984 and 1985. They returned to Minnesota in 1985, where Dave worked as a diagnostic radiologist with St. Paul Radiology until his retirement in 1996, at age 53. During the following decades, Dave pursued his many interests enthusiastically: he and Merrie traveled extensively, they were deeply engaged with performing and visual arts organizations in the Twin Cities, and Dave founded the Westside Trombone Quartet, with whom he performed often. He was also a member of The Classic Big Band and the Nostalgics Vocal Quartet. Dave was an active member of Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina, including serving as a Stephen Minister and as a board member of the church's Center for Healing & Wholeness, which serves seniors and their families. He also played with Normandale Low Brass. Dave was kind, intelligent, curious, and loving. He found joy and solace in music and literature. He connected with the people he loved in profound ways and was an inspiration to many. Above all, he was wholly devoted to his beloved wife, Merrie, and loved being with her and enjoying life with her. Dave died on December 23, 2025, in Bloomington, Minnesota. He is survived by Merrie Dahlgren, along with his brother Bob Dahlgren (of Atlanta, Georgia), and his daughters and their families: Sarah Dahlgren Pritts and Tim Pritts, and children Caroline (15), Andrew (13) and Kristina (13) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Kari Dahlgren and Eduardo de Ugarte and their children Sol (21) and Kajsa (18) of Berkeley, California. A memorial service will be held on January 16, 2026, at Normandale Lutheran Church.
