David Joel Bennett Obituary

Rockville, MD - David J Bennett, age 89, passed away peacefully on March 18th, 2025, in Rockville, Maryland.


David was born August 25, 1935 in Brooklyn, NY where he grew up. He attended The Cooper Union and the University of Minnesota where he studied architecture. He was an accomplished architect and became a Professor of Architecture at the University of Minnesota, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the principal of the architecture and engineering firm BRW in Minneapolis, Minnesota from the 1970s until the 1990s.


He designed many prominent commercial buildings including the Charles Lindbergh Visitor Center, and the award winning Civil Mineral Engineering building at the University of Minnesota, which incorporated cutting edge technology related to earth sheltered design. It was awarded the Civil Engineer's Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement in 1983.


David maintained a lifelong interest in sustainability and how architecture and technology could be harnessed to improve people's lives and the planet. He believed deeply in leaving the world a better place and undertook work in an effort to contribute to the progression of design and planning for a better future.


David continued to practice architecture after leaving BRW, working independently on both commercial and residential properties in the great metro area of New York City.


He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Bennett, his son-in-law Michael Dinces and his two beautiful grandchildren, Owen and Lila Dinces of Bethesda, MD. He is also survived by his sister, Paula Halpern, who lives outside Boston. His wife, Judith D Bennett, passed away in 2021.


A memorial will be held in Brooklyn, NY in September.
