St. Louis Park - Charles Devereux McCarthy died peacefully at his home in St. Louis Park, MN on July 12, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on the 7th of January 1932, in Minneapolis, MN, Charles lived a life full of curiosity, creativity, and connection.

Charles was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he cultivated not only his academic foundation but also his athletic spirit as a member of the university's swim and track teams. He was an active member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and often spoke fondly of his time at the university.

His professional journey was as diverse as it was impressive. Charles began his career with The McCarthy Brothers in the Grain Exchange business, a company founded by his grandfather, Thomas George McCarthy. He later transitioned into roles that showcased his innovative spirit and adaptability, including work with the toy and game development team that created Twister. His career also spanned telephone system sales, bond sales, and real estate—fields where his creativity and determination shone.

Charles was drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 5 January 1955 to 1 October 1956 and trained in electronics, further demonstrating his technical aptitude and commitment to service. His military experience added another layer to his multifaceted life.

Charles, an avid skier from childhood until his mid-eighties, developed a beautiful style. In 1956, he became an investor in Buck Hill Ski Area and served on its Board of Directors for many years. His passion for skiing extended to competitive racing; he participated in NASTAR races for decades and achieved top-ten rankings in both the 40-49 age bracket in 1974 and the 50-59 age bracket in 1983. He taught many people to ski and enjoyed providing pointers on chairlifts. He loved a good road trip and ventured out west to various ski areas where he visited family and friends and enjoyed the beautiful mountain skiing and vistas.

Charles's intellectual curiosity was boundless. He was a voracious reader who delighted in sharing knowledge gleaned from magazines or newspapers with those around him. He was a consummate fix-it guy who could repair just about anything and believed it was important to have the right tools for the job. His fascination with how things worked fueled countless conversations and inspired those who knew him.

Family was central to Charles's life. He is survived by his sons Stephen Charles McCarthy and James Devereux McCarthy; his daughter Katherine Beaupre McCarthy; and his cherished granddaughter Anna Beaupre Macal McCarthy, with whom he shared a particularly special bond. Charles found immense joy in serving as part father and part grandfather to Anna—whether skiing at Buck Hill, walking together at Westwood Hills Nature Center, exploring local construction sites, discussing important topics of the day, or listening intently to her stories. Their mutual love and admiration was beautiful to behold.

He is also survived by his first wife Ann Eldredge Anderson (Gil), whom he lovingly referred to as "the mother of my children"; his sister Kathleen McCarthy Jewett; brother-in-law David Boies; his step-children, Catherine Satterfield and Ryan Satterfield; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who enriched his life immeasurably.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents Charles Herman McCarthy and Grace Devereux McCarthy; siblings William Devereux McCarthy, Sheila McCarthy Boies, and Kevin Thomas McCarthy; his daughter Helen Towle McCarthy; his second wife Dr. Sharon Burgan Satterfield, her daughter, Elizabeth Satterfield; his brother-in-law Frank Greenwood Jewett III, and numerous cherished friends and family members.

A loyal friend who never forgot a birthday, Charles had a gift for making those around him feel valued. He was generous with his time, talent, and treasure, and believed strongly in his father's advice to "Think of the other guy." His legacy as a devoted family man, proud Minnesotan, and creative thinker will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

A Celebration of life will be held at Westwood Hills Nature Center (8300 W. Franklin Ave., St. Louis Park, MN 55426) on Friday 24 July 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with a short commemorative service at 6:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your charity of choice.
