Orono, MN - was raised with sister Bea in southern Minnesota. The family moved to Minneapolis after Carol's junior year of high school. Carol met her future husband Howard at Luther League. Both families attended Zion Lutheran Church. Carol attended Central High School, Howard was in her home room and attended senior prom together and graduated in 1952. Carol earned her diploma in nursing from Swedish Hospital School of Nursing in 1955 and married Howard when he returned from service in the U.S. Navy. Carol worked as a nurse in a pediatric clinic until becoming a mother and homemaker. As a young mother she was diagnosed with breast cancer and successfully completed treatment and became a survivor. In addition to raising four children, she stayed connected with family and friends, kept up her nursing license and annual Swedish Hospital class reunions, participated in a monthly bridge club for over 50 years. Carol was an active volunteer at school functions and PTA, League of Women Voters, American Cancer Society, Memorial Blood Center. At Gethsemene Lutheran Church, Carol participated in Bible studies, helped resettle Vietnamese refugees, was active on committees, as a volunteer in the after school program for Alice Smith Elementary, adult education and more. Carol appreciated nature and art, enjoyed reading, and music. Carol enjoyed entertaining and traveling with Howard including annual trips with friends to New Orleans and the Bahamas, and traveled to Mexico, Europe, Thailand, Japan and Korea. Summers included annual trips to Atsokan Island on Rainy Lake starting in 1963. Carol was a quiet and staunch supporter of women's rights including Planned Parenthood. She also placed a priority on health, exercise classes, and enjoyed cross skiing with friends in local parks. She truly believed all people are equal in the eyes of God. She had a strong faith and was very connected with family. Over recent years with a slow decline with dementia, the core of the kind person she was shined to her very last days. She always had a kind word and appreciation for a visit. As a family we are grateful for the way she parented and lived her version of life, instilling values by action and example. The family is grateful for the care from the staff of Valora Senior Living in Orono where she spent her final months, and LifeSpark Hospice in her final weeks. Born in Winona, MN on December 21, 1934, died in Orono, MN on May 14, 2026. Preceded in death by parents Conrad Christ Allemann and Signe (Steen) (Allemann) Gabrielson, and husband Howard Byron Hanson. Survived by daughters Katie Sung Hanson (Nashville) and Pamela (Robert) Goldman, sons Howard Bryan Hanson (Minneapolis) and James Conrad Hanson (Florida and Ranier, Minnesota), grandchildren Phoebe Goldman (New York) and Elana Goldman (Minneapolis), sister Bea Lindwall (Wausau, WI), niece Karen (Theran) Rusch (Wausau), grand nephews Matthew (Diana) Rusch (Omaha) and David (Calla) Rusch (Wausau), great nephews and nieces, and cousins and friends. Memorial Service at Gethsemene Lutheran Church, 715 Minnetonka Mills Road, Hopkins, MN 55343, Tuesday June 23, visitation 10:00, a.m., service 11:00 a.m. followed by lunch. Memorials preferred to anything relating to women's and civil rights, the environment, American Cancer Society, or Gethsemene Lutheran Church.
