Carl D. Weiner, a longtime, beloved history professor at Carleton College, passed away on August 25 in Saint Paul. He was 90. Born in New York City, Carl spent most of his adult life in Minnesota. He was someone few people could forget, bringing European history to life for generations of Carleton students. He possessed sharp intelligence, a wry sense of humor and the capacity for tremendous kindness. Although he sometimes presented a gruff exterior, his love for those closest to him was never in doubt.

Carl is survived by his wife, Ruth Weiner, a fellow Carleton professor; his sons, Nick, Kevin and Daniel Weiner; his daughters-in-law, Liz Mozden and Kara Weiner; his son-in-law, Carl Roller; his grandchildren, Quinn, Nathan, Zoe, Kaya, Adam and David Weiner; his brother, Rob Weiner, Rob's wife Arlene and their family; and many other family, friends, colleagues and former students.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 27 in the Great Hall at Carleton. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Carleton and will support financial aid and social justice internships, in line with Carl and Ruth's values.
