St. Paul, MN - Beverly Jean (Olson) Ferguson, age 90, died in St. Paul on Nov. 6, 2025 with her family by her side, following a heart attack. Born on Aug. 16, 1935, in Fargo, North Dakota to Esther Dewey Olson and Casper Martin Olson, Bev spent her childhood summers barefoot with her older sister Myrt and cousins on their grandmother's farm in Felton, Minn. She graduated from Fargo Central High in 1953 and enrolled as a scholarship student at North Dakota State University.

In a sociology class her sophomore year, she met the love of her life, Richard Whitt Ferguson; they were married for 49 years. Daughter Kevlyn Jean was born in 1958; the family lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa, then settled in St. Paul, where Bev taught speech and communications at Concordia College.

In 1979, she joined the faculty at Metropolitan State University, a nontraditional school for working adults. It was a perfect fit. "The philosophy that Metro lived by day by day, student by student, seemed so right to me that every day, every debate brought a feeling of belonging. I suppose in some ways, I saw Metro as a cause and I had been drawn to causes all my life," she wrote in a memoir. "I have always been proud to say I was part of the forming of this truly different and marvelous institution."

A world-class communicator, Bev was a faithful sender of birthday cards and photographs to a wide circle of friends and relations, a keeper of family stories and a consummate host who organized her own 90th birthday party in her backyard, where she was celebrated by loving family, neighbors, and former colleagues and students.

Bev was predeceased by her husband, Richard Whitt Ferguson; daughter, Kevlyn Jean Ferguson Pastorius and granddaughter Sarah Jean Pastorius, all from St. Paul, and her sister, Myrt Olson Armstrong, of Bismarck, North Dakota. She is survived by her grandsons Justin (Tiffany) of Livermore, Calif., and James (Grace) of Mesa, Ariz.; great-grandchildren Brendan Velander and Kaison, Bobby, Brylee, Johnny and Sarah Pastorius; and lifelong friends and extended family.

A memorial service in celebration of Bev's life will be held on Sat., Dec. 6 at noon at The University Club of St. Paul, 420 Summit Avenue, preceded by visitation at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ACLU can be made in her memory at aclu-mn.org.
