Betty Lou Olson Obituary

Plymouth - Betty Lou Olson was born on November 15, 1930, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Oscar and Ella Haggin Olson. She spent her childhood in Gayville, where she attended school from grades 1–12. As an only child, Betty found joy in school activities, friendships, and music. At Gayville High School, she was valedictorian and played trumpet at memorials and celebrations, including when WWII ended.

Inspired by a friend, Betty began her studies in radiology at Sacred Heart Hospital, graduating in 1949. She completed her internship in Omaha and later worked in Sioux City, where she helped grow a radiology department into a strong program. Over the years, Betty continued her education, earning a B.A. in Social Studies from Briar Cliff College and a Master's degree in Counseling from Iowa State University.

Betty's career spanned both medical and educational fields. She worked as an x-ray technician, nursing administrator, and Director of Activities at Luther School of Nursing Hospital. She then transitioned into counseling, serving at Onawa Public Schools, St. Louis Park High School, and Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minnesota. Betty's gift for helping others discover their strengths led her to start a counseling program for students at risk of dropping out.

In 1972, she founded the Community Career Center with Robbinsdale Schools, where she guided high school students, families, and teachers through career and personal exploration. She was named Counselor of the Year and received the Jules Kerman Award for her work. In 1981, Betty formed her own private practice, Betty Olson and Associates, offering counseling services to schools, businesses, and organizations including Control Data, Pillsbury, Tennant, General Mills, and the American Lutheran Church. She continued part-time private practice until retiring at age 70. She celebrated her 94th birthday with joy and lived her later years at The Heathers Assisted Living.

Betty will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, kindness, and unwavering faith. She was a treasured friend whose life and love made a powerful difference in the lives of so many.
