Plymouth, MN - Dick was born January 17th 1937 in Omaha, NE and grew up in Iowa and Tacoma, WA. He graduated from Coon Rapids High School in Coon Rapids, IA in 1955. He attended Luther College in Decorah, IA where he met his wife Martha Smith. He graduated in 1959 with a degree in Mathematics, and he and Martha were married at the end of August that year. He obtained a Masters degree in Math at Vanderbilt University then continued Mathematics studies at Columbia University in NYC while teaching Math and Science in White Plains, NY before joining IBM in 1962.
Dick enjoyed an interesting career with IBM Corp. Starting in Knoxville and Chattanooga, TN with moves to Rochester, MN, Endicott, NY and then Tokyo and Hong Kong. He worked to expand markets and agent sales channels throughout Asia and the South Pacific. He was involved with product development of mid-range computer solutions and played a key role implementing Japanese and Chinese language on IBM computers and printers. After 25 years with IBM he and Martha moved to Singapore where he was Managing Director of a computer solutions company. They moved to Vietnam in 1994 when the US lifted its embargo as an IBM marketing consultant for 6 months.
Dick and Martha initially retired to Ponte Vedra Beach, FL living at Sawgrass where he served on the Sawgrass board and two terms as President of the Sawgrass Association. An avid golfer since his teenage years in Iowa he was proud to get his handicap back down to 6. They returned to the Midwest in 2000, first to Iowa where he resumed his passion for pheasant hunting, and then the family cottage in Glenwood, MN before settling in downtown Minneapolis. He served on the Mill City Commons board as Treasurer and then on the Ecumen Board from 2013-22. Dick became active in the Alzheimer's Association when Martha was diagnosed with Dementia in 2010. He lost her to Covid in 2020.
Dick enjoyed a wonderful 89th birthday with family; he passed away the morning of February 3, 2026. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha of 61 years, his parents Art and Edith Olson of Glenwood, MN. He is survived by his daughter Kirstin (Wolfe) of Woodbury, MN; sons: Kendrick (Le) of Omaha, NE and Randy (Kris) of Plymouth, MN. His six grandchildren: Ingrid (Andrew) Melaas, Sonja (Anthony) Melaas, Lukas Olson, Leah Olson, Marin (Noah) Olson, Aren (Linh-An) Olson; and his great granddaughter AiVy Olson.
Celebration of life to be scheduled. In lieu of flowers, memorials to ACLU, Planned Parenthood are appreciated.
