S. H. Tsai Obituary
Tsai S. H. "Rudi", age 86, of Edina, formerly of Minneapolis, on August 27. Retired head of HCMC radiology department. Preceded in death by wife, Yukee (Ruby). Survived by son, Steve (Margaret Simpson) of Minneapolis; daughter, Eugenie (Thomas Finkelpearl) of New York; sister, H. H. Tsai of Shanghai; and grandchildren, Paul, Laura, and Julius. Dr. Tsai was born in Shanghai, where he received his M.D degree and completed internship and residency. In 1947 he arrived at the Glen Lake Sanatorium in what is now Minnetonka to pursue advanced training in tuberculosis, intending to return to China. Following the 1949 revolution, he did not return but remained at Glen Lake, where he was later made a senior staff physician. He participated in research on new medicines to combat tuberculosis. In 1959 he began formal training in radiology at the Mpls VA and U of M hospitals and afterward served on the VA radiology staff. In 1965 he was appointed to be the head of the HCMC radiology department where he served until retiring in 1986, practicing part-time for several years afterward. Dr. Tsai was an associate professor of radiology at the U of M. An authority on chest radiology, he published scientific papers and enjoyed teaching residents and medical students. During retirement he dabbled in writing mystery fiction, and in 2004 published The Jade Cicada, a mystery novel set during the Ming Dynasty. He enjoyed dining at local Chinese restaurants.
