Hanson, Gregory Allen passed away on September 11, 2023. Greg grew up in Bloomington and was bright and active from a young age. In 6th grade alone, he served as the president of his school class - "Don't be an egg, vote for Greg!" - and pitched a no-hitter in little league. Friends called him "worm" because he could squeeze through a hole in the fence at nearby Metropolitan Stadium to watch the Minnesota Twins play baseball. While attending the University of Minnesota, Greg met the love of his life, Nancy Irvin, as they built a giant papier-mâché Golden Gopher for a homecoming float. Greg and Nancy were married in June 1973. He became an active and dedicated father to son Sam and daughter Emily and raised his family in Edina. Greg spent his career in the financial services industry in Minneapolis. He made numerous lifelong friends during his years working at Northwestern National Life, Washington Square Advisors, Piper Jaffray, and US Bank. Greg was a dedicated volunteer and much of his volunteer work centered on children. Greg also loved to golf and was a distance-running enthusiast until his knees gave out, at which point he turned into a road-biking addict. When Greg was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2017, he and Nancy moved to Seattle. He fought back against the disease in the way that only a fitness fanatic could - participating in, Pedaling for Parkinson's at the YMCA and the Parkinson's Fitness Project. Over the past six years he has taught his family and friends one final lesson in the meaning of endurance and resilience. Parkinson's also taught him some important lessons. He found a silver lining in embracing the fact that, after years of helping people, he now needed others' help. Greg was tremendously fun-loving and big hearted - always a mischievous sparkle in his eyes. He believed in doing things the right way and wasn't afraid to let others know when they weren't living up to his high expectations. He was curious about the world, but humble about his smarts and achievements. Most of all, he was fiercely devoted to his loved ones, especially to Emily, Sam, and Nancy. They were by his side until the end. Greg loved young children - especially his five grandchildren. He will be sorely missed. Greg is survived by Nancy, his loving wife of 50 years. He is also survived by his son Sam (Cloe), daughter Emily (Andrew), sister Gail Hinson and 5 grandchildren (Nora, Caroline, Julia, Margaret, and Max). For those wishing to make a donation in his memory, please give to the Downtown Seattle YMCA, the Northwest Chapter of the American Parkinson's Disease Association or People Serving People in Minneapolis.
