Duane Harves Obituary

The Honorable Judge Duane Richard Harves, 83, of Apple Valley, MN, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on June 8, 2024, due to Alzheimer's disease. Throughout his life, he was not only dedicated to his family but also committed to the pursuit of equitable justice for all. Born on December 16, 1940, Duane was son to Floyd and Margaret Harves, and brother to Sharon, Butch, Rick, Dan, and Patrick. Raised in Albert Lea, MN, Duane played football, basketball, and golf, and won the city's golf title in 1961. He earned his bachelor's degree from Mankato State University where he met his wife Sue. In 1962, they played lead roles in a collegiate production of "Guys and Dolls," performing overseas during a seven-week tour in the South Pacific. In 1967, Duane obtained his law degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, MN, and in 1976, he was appointed by the governor to the newly created position of Chief Administrative Law Judge of the Minnesota Office of Administrative Hearings. Twelve years later, Duane became a District Court Judge in the First Judicial District where he served until 2004. He was also a member of the faculty at the National Judicial College in Reno, NV where he enjoyed teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with other judges for 30 years. Duane considered himself fortunate to have been the recipient of a successful heart transplant at the University of Minnesota in 2011. He spent the remaining 13 years of his life with a strong heart that never faltered. His love of sports, especially golf, continued throughout his life, even after he could no longer play. Duane was preceded in death by his son David, and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sue, daughter Stephanie and her husband Olivier Pauluis, son Scott and his wife Nikki, and grandchildren Haley and Tommy. A celebration of Duane's life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 7110 France Avenue South, Edina, at 2pm, on Thursday June 20. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Duane's honor to the Alzheimer's Association or to the University of Minnesota Transplant Research Fund.
