Daniel Cohen Obituary

Cohen, Daniel Willard age 87 of Minneapolis, died on Thursday, April 4th, 2024. Dan was born in Chicago on June 10, 1936. He attended Breck School until his junior year and graduated from high school at Blake School. He went on to graduate from Stanford University, where he met his wife of 64 years, Gail, and later graduated from Harvard Law. Dan put his legal experience to work suing the Minneapolis Star and Tribune in a landmark case he won that reached the Supreme Court and preserved the right of journalists to keep their sources anonymous (Cohen v. Cowles Media Co.). Dan also worked as a stockbroker at Piper Jaffray and went on to operate a solo public relations company. Dan wrote numerous books including Undefeated: A Life of Hubert H. Humphrey, and a series of murder mystery books featuring his two daughters, Ruth and Polly. In addition to writing books under his own byline, Dan was a ghost writer for a series of newspaper columns and books that went on to become NYT best-sellers. Active in politics, Dan held stints on the Minneapolis City Council (including President) and the Hennepin County Planning Commission, where he also served as President. Dan's pursuits in his later years were as varied as his professional career. Dan was an active racehorse owner at Canterbury Park and was on the Board of the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association. Dan also enjoyed playing poker and devoting his time to help save the bees. In addition to his wife, Gail, and two children, Ruth and Polly (Rob), Dan is survived by his daughter Jorah (JR) in addition to grandchildren, Marlowe, Sonya, and Jonas. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sylvia and Merrill Cohen, and brother, David Cohen. Dan was buried in a private ceremony. Hodroff-Epstein 612-871-1234 www.hodroffepstein.com
